Spencer Grey
June 20th – July 13th
Public Reception: June 20th 6 – 9pm
We all have our demons and Spencer Grey like us battles with his own. The unique thing about his particular struggle is the side effect renders his demons into physical form, often in pen and ink. “Plants Animals & Demons” chronicles Spencer’s experiences and growth since his arrival in Tacoma Washington one year ago. Originally from Portland Oregon Spencer is a self-taught illustrator and painter with pen and ink being his medium of preference. Plants and animals tend to be his subject matter, completed in a brooding aesthetic style reminiscent of the occult. Spencer is our observer and witness to the natural world. Inspired with the mathematical grace of fractal patterned plant life. Calmed by the exquisite beauty of decay, reclaimed abandoned spaces, and the oxidization of weathered materials. These elements speak of history, growth, and a natural order.
Spencer produces a range of artworks, intimate pieces small enough to fit in your pocket, and some site-specific work large enough to skateboard through. “Serenity Occult” is such a piece, an interactive mural located in the Hilltop neighborhood not far from Fulcrum Gallery. This multi level composition incorporates an old stairwell, pass-through into his composition of cloud forms, symbolic geometry, and suggestive meditations.
